Why correction matters

Artwork tends to lean forward

Artwork suspended from a hanging system can sit farther forward than it would when fixed directly to the wall. The effect varies with the frame, picture wire and hanging hardware, but is always worth considering when ordering.

Suspended from above

A hanging system suspends artwork from above rather than fixing it directly to the wall. Because nothing behind the frame is pulling it back, the top of the artwork tends to sit farther forward.

A single piece can look untidy

Forward lean is particularly noticeable in narrow hallways and smaller spaces, and can be more prevalent with landscape pieces and smaller frames.

A column can lose alignment

When a lower piece leans forward, it can pull the shared dropper away from the wall. Pieces above it will swivel around the dropper and sit out of alignment.

How to correct it

HangRight Clips and felt wall protectors

HangRight Clips reduce the distance between the frame and the dropper, pulling the top of the artwork back towards the wall. Felt wall protectors cushion and position the lower corners. Use them separately or together depending on the display.

A single artwork

For a suitable wooden frame or canvas, use one HangRight Clip when single hanging from one dropper. When double hanging with a dropper on either side, use two clips—one for each dropper.

Artwork in a column

Fit one HangRight Clip to each suitable frame, then stack two felt protectors at each lower corner—four protectors per artwork. The added spacing gives the shared dropper clearance and helps prevent pieces from affecting one another.

Protect the lower corners

If the frame does not already have felt or foam protection, place one felt protector near each lower corner to cushion the wall and help the artwork rest evenly.

Frequently asked questions

Victorian picture rail hanging correction questions

Answers about forward lean, frame compatibility, wall protection and hanging artwork in columns.

Do I need both HangRight Clips and felt wall protectors?

For a suitable frame, a HangRight Clip will often provide the main correction needed to reduce forward lean. Add felt protectors if the lower corners do not already have felt or foam protection. For artwork arranged in a column, use both: fit one HangRight Clip to each suitable frame and stack two felt protectors at each lower corner. See How to Hang Pieces Flat on a Picture Hanging System for help correcting forward lean and our guide to hanging art in a column for vertically arranged displays.

Which frames can use HangRight Clips?

HangRight Clips are intended for wooden frames and canvases that can appropriately accept the supplied screw. Each clip is screw-fixed to the artwork. They are not designed to work natively with aluminium frames, so contact Shakespeare Solutions if you need help getting an aluminium-framed piece to sit correctly.

Where should felt wall protectors be placed?

Place one near each lower corner of the artwork so the felt, rather than the frame, rests against the wall.

HangRight Clips

A clever addition to our range which helps to ensure your pieces sit as flat against the wall as possible. We highly recommend ordering a pack or two to assist those pieces which lean forward when suspended on a hanging system.

Felt Wall Protectors

The wall protectors consist of a firm felt with an adhesive backing and are acid free.  12mm diameter and 6mm high they are perfect for everyday applications or can be doubled up to create a 12mm high wall protector which can be very useful when you need to push the bottom of the suspended piece out from the wall slightly; often useful when hanging more than once piece on the same dropper.
